Venture Fund Business

Over the past years, Hikari has aggressively and passionately invested in many venture companies and fostering many diffent kinds of new businesses.
As a result of past direct investment and fund investment, Hikari (and its funds) has a portfolio of more than 80 IPOs (listed below).

Soon after the end of the IT bubble in 2000, Hikari stepped back from new venture investments. In 2005, HPE was established (originally Fits Asset Management, Inc.) to manage new venture funds and sector-specific funds.
HPE utilizes Hikari's distribution and corporate/consumer networks, business support, monetary ideas and management experience in order to generate added-value for portfolio companies.

Hikari and/or its subsidiaries invest more than 20% of each fund whose general partner is HPE. Investments have been made mainly in the following sectors both in Japan and other Pan-Pacific regions, such as the US, China, Korea, Philippine, and Australia:

1) IT, Mobile Telecommunications, Broadband, Digital Content
2) Medical, Healthcare, Environment/Energy
3) Financial Sectors
4) Real Estate (depended on macro environment, timing, and region)
5) Consumption & Retail (depended on macro environment, timing, and region).

In addition, HPE supports entrepreneurs not only to set up new companies but also to provide exits for their companies. In which case, HPE sometimes takes an active role of lead investor in a financing round and sends an experienced board member to its portfolio companies to give them advice on strategies, management, monetizing business model, finance, compliance, sales, development, and so on, depending on the situation.

As of February 2008, there have been more than 80 IPOs among Hikari portfolio companies, its subsidiaries, and funds (whose general partner is Hikari organization) around the globe, as shown below.
